Scholars Return to Serving the Community

With the reopening of operations at Fresno State at the start of the Fall 2021 semester, President’s Honors Scholars were finally able to return to serving the Fresno community in-person.

For many, it’s been a long time since they last put on the blue polo. Nearly two years prior, all community service operations ceased with the ongoing pandemic, and limited virtual work was all they were able to offer during the 2020-2021 academic year.

Now, they have returned to serving new faces and old alike.

Dine and Discover West Africa 2021 - West African Vocational Schools (WAVS) Banquet. October 2021.

Since 2017, the Smittcamp Family Honors College has volunteered at the annual West African Vocational Schools (WAVS) Banquet. Volunteers helped prepare food and set up the event space in the days leading up to the dinner banquet.

Marjaree Mason Center Halloween Drive. September-October 2021.

When it comes to new faces, the Marjaree Mason Center is a big one. Through events like the Halloween Costume Drive and Tree of Hope, our scholars helped the Marjaree Mason Center in their mission to support victims of domestic violence in the Fresno area. During the Halloween Costume Drive, scholar helped collect, clean, and mend costumes to be given to children of domestic abuse victims. At the Tree of Hope event in December, scholars sorted gifts to be taken to families.

Kiss Country for Kids Radiothon (Valley Children's Healthcare Foundation). September 9-10, 2021.

At the beginning of the academic year, scholars volunteered at the annual Kiss Country for Kids Radiothon (Valley Children's Healthcare Foundation) by answering phone calls.

Operation Christmas Child. December 2021.

Every year, the Council of President’s Scholars (COPS, the student representatives of the SFHC) coordinates multiple social events and helps our scholars find community service opportunities. Operation Christmas Child is a wide-scale project wherein community members wrap shoeboxes full of gifts for children in need. Gifts range from essentials like toothbrushes and floss to small toys and art supplies.
