Summer 2022 Newsletter

Dear alumni, families, and friends of the Smittcamp Family Honors College (SFHC),

Welcome to the Summer 2022 issue of Honorable Times, the semi-annual SFHC Newsletter!

How is it June 2022 already–where has the year gone?! This past academic year has certainly been one for the history books, as we had to navigate an ever-changing terrain, trying to transition from an all-virtual setting to hybrid and in-person modes. Things may not be entirely back to normal yet, but I am pleased to report that the Honors Office has, once again, been filled with in-person conversations, interactions, and laughter that had been missing for so long during the first 2 years of the pandemic-forced campus shutdown. Although masks and occasional virtual meetings are still with us, the pivot to a more traditional educational setting has been a welcome and reinvigorating development for all of us.

Through all of the uncertainties associated with the pandemic, the common thread that has come to the fore is the importance of togetherness, connection to others, and the inspiring messages of hope that accompany those encounters. In this regard, what I know to be true is that SFHC alumni support one another, our current students, and their respective communities. For the past 8 years, I have invited some of you to give a talk at the Honors Colloquium, or to provide advice to a scholar, or, more recently, to share with us your current status as reflected in the “Featured Alumni” section of this newsletter. In doing so, my vision has been to highlight the incredible work that our alumni are doing, so that they could serve as role models of success for our current scholars. The answer to such an invitation has always been, “Yes, of course!” Thank you for your willingness to give back in any way you can–your involvement will inspire others to do the same.
