Dear alumni, families, and friends of the Smittcamp Family Honors College (SFHC),

Welcome to the Summer 2023 issue of Honorable Times, the semi-annual SFHC Newsletter!

In mid-August 2023, we will welcome the 25th Cohort of SFHC Scholars (with the first Cohort having been admitted in August 1999). Yes, this Honors College has been serving the Fresno area community, as well as those across the Valley and other parts of California, for a quarter of a century now!

The story of how SFHC came to existence starts with the efforts of one individual who, for years, envisioned having an Honors College on the Fresno State campus with the belief that such an entity would enhance the intellectual environment for all students and faculty at this university. That person is no other than Dr. Robert Ware, the Founding Director of SFHC. Many of our alumni probably do not remember having met Dr. Ware, let alone know much about his contributions to the establishment and development of SFHC in its earliest phase. The reason for that is simply because Dr. Ware, a Professor of Theatre Arts (1978-1999), retired soon after SFHC was established. Twenty five years later, Dr. Ware’s vision has been well-realized. Therefore, I thought it was fitting to dedicate this issue of Honorable Times to Dr. Ware. You can read a slightly edited version of his original description of the history of SFHC in Smittcamp Turns 25!
