Smittcamp Gives Back - Fall 2021

Smittcamp volunteer activities plant the seeds for lifelong community engagement. Our alumni demonstrate this by speaking at the Honors College colloquium, mentoring current students, providing internship opportunities, and supporting the Honors College with their generous financial donations.

All these activities are ingredients in a culture of philanthropy. We will be highlighting those Smitties who choose to give back on our social media platforms and in upcoming newsletters.

In this issue, we would like to showcase the following Smittcamp alumni:

  • In Fall 2020, the following alumni started a Pre-med Mentoring Group by holding occasional workshops for our current scholars who plan to apply to medical school:

    • Max Hill (B.S. Biology, May 2016; University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine, Class of 2023)

    • Arjun Mann (B.A. Philosophy, May 2016; University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine, Class of 2023)

    • Boris Pavic (B.S. Biology, May 2016; UCLA School of Medicine, Class of 2023)

  • Sarah Hawkins (B.S. General Kinesiology; 2004, M.A. Sports Psychology; ’05) donated a kidney in 2019 to the father of an elementary school classmate. She was featured in a Fresno State News story on June 16th, 2021.

  • Garrett Jones (B.A. Mass Communications and Broadcast Journalism; May 2003) gave a talk at the Honors Colloquium in September 2015 about his experience with entrepreneurship and has offered to provide professional advice to those scholars who may be interested in starting their own business.

  • Ashley Jacobsen (B.S. Business Administration, Accountancy; May 2003) gave a talk at the Honors Colloquium in September 2018 to share her insights into creating one’s career.

  • Amanda Whitten (B.A. Political Science, and B.S. Criminology; May 2004) gave an in-person talk at the Honors Colloquium in March 2020 (before the pandemic-forced shutdown of Fresno State) where she shared the lessons learned from her travels through the seven continents, building a law practice, and a life of her own.

  • Brent Hansen (B.S. Business Administration, Marketing; May 2006) gave a virtual talk at the Honors Colloquium in September 2020 about his experience at SFHC as well as mentoring and community service.  He has volunteered to serve as a mentor to current Scholars who are interested in pursuing a career in marketing and sales.
